Cantley Village Hall responds to British Sugar announcement

The Trustees of Cantley Village Hall CIO have expressed their sadness following British Sugar's announcement that it is proposing to cease sugar production at its Cantley factory following the 2026/27 campaign.

Stephen Heard, Chair of Trustees, said:

"British Sugar has been part of the fabric of Cantley for well over a century. Generations of local families have worked at the factory or supported the wider sugar beet industry, and yesterday’s announcement will be deeply concerning for employees, growers, contractors, local businesses and the wider community.

"On behalf of the Trustees of Cantley Village Hall, I would like to thank British Sugar for informing us directly of its proposal and to acknowledge the difficult circumstances facing the company's leadership and workforce as they begin what will undoubtedly be a challenging period of consultation.

"Whilst the future of the factory will now be the subject of detailed discussions between British Sugar, its employees and their representatives, our immediate thoughts are with everyone whose livelihoods and families may be affected."

The Trustees believe the announcement reinforces the importance of investing in the long-term resilience of the village. Cantley Village Hall CIO is progressing ambitious plans to redevelop the existing village hall into a modern community, health and wellbeing hub, providing flexible community space alongside clinical consulting rooms and facilities capable of supporting local health, wellbeing, voluntary sector and community services.

Stephen Heard continued:

"Strong communities need strong community infrastructure. As villages face increasing economic, health and social challenges, places such as Cantley Village Hall become even more important in bringing people together, supporting wellbeing and providing services closer to where people live.

"Our vision has always been to create a lasting community asset that will serve future generations. Recent national policy supporting neighbourhood health, together with the challenges now facing our village, only strengthens the case for that investment."

The Trustees have written to British Sugar seeking an opportunity to meet and discuss how the company and the Village Hall might continue to work together for the benefit of Cantley during this period of transition.

"We have enjoyed a positive relationship with British Sugar over many years," added Stephen Heard. "Whatever the outcome of the consultation, we hope to work constructively with the company and other partners to ensure Cantley continues to thrive and that British Sugar's long association with our village leaves a positive and lasting legacy."
